Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei

Born in Mashhad back in 1939, Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei grew up in a pretty strict religious household. He took over as Iran’s Supreme Leader in 1989 after Ruhollah Khomeini passed away. For 37 years, he held the ultimate authority over the country’s military, courts, and media. Love him or hate him, you can’t deny the sheer grip he had on Iranian politics.

Physically, he stood around 5 feet 8 inches tall and kept an average build, weighing roughly 75 kg. But the most noticeable thing about him was his right arm. Back in 1981, he survived a crazy assassination attempt when a bomb went off inside a tape recorder. It left his right arm permanently paralyzed, which is why you’d always see him using his left hand to wave or hold things.

When he wasn’t dealing with state affairs, he actually had some pretty quiet hobbies. He was a huge fan of Persian poetry and loved reading it in his spare time. In his younger days, he really enjoyed hiking in the mountains around Tehran. He married Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh way back in 1964. They had six kids together, including Mojtaba, who a lot of people thought might take over his role one day. Sadly, the recent airstrike didn’t just target him. Reports are coming in that his daughter, son-in-law, and even a grandchild lost their lives in the exact same attack.
